Juno Cup

As part of the annual Juno festivities ex-NHL players took to the ice with current musical sensations like High Valley, Classified and Jim Cuddy for this years Juno Cup game.

The game happens every year since its inauguration in 2004 and this year, as part of the Juno celebrations, it was held at the Nepean Sportsplex. Both rockers and NHL alumni laced up to play a game for the charity MusiCounts, not to mention the delight of fans of all ages.

This years game was a nearly sold out event and there was hardly a free seat in the Steve Yzerman arena.

Bywardofmouth was on site and had the chance to catch up with some of the talent on the ice.

Treepot 2 Filmmakers Showcase

I Saw a Movie Once In my Home Town…

Have you ever sat in a theatre and asked yourself what it would be like to work on a movie? Have you ever watched TV and wondered what kind of Director you’d make? What happened to those dreams? Did they seem unattainable? Did you feel that movie making was reserved for people who live in Hollywood? Well, guess what? there are people in your own backyard making movie magic everyday.

On March 29th the Treepot Filmmaker Showcase 2 went down at the Bytowne Cinema; and this gave Ottawa’s talent a platform to debut their latest undertakings . Music videos, edgy dramas and trailers to some very cool upcoming projects lit up the big screen. Many differing genres and distinct voices made for an eclectic assortment that delighted viewers. Kevin Friel’s “Ripples” brought the ruckus, so much so it brought down the house (of commons). “First World Problems”, a documentary about our generation’s search for purpose definitely makes oneself re-think life’s value- It’s time I take my bacon flavored tooth paste to the next level. The great thing about Treepot is that there is something for everybody- and you may not like every film but you’re bound to love some of them. It was amazing to see this cultivation of talent and I’ll be looking forward to Treepot 3.

Yes, the Ottawa filmmaking community is doing well and it’s Showcases like this that keep it growing every year. Check out all the projects featured at the showcase on the Treepot website.

Unrequited Death – Helen Gregory

Desiccate III

A native of St. John’s Newfoundland, Helen Gregory holds a BFA and Masters degree and is currently earning her PHD in art and visual culture from Western University in London Ontario. It was her graduate work however which lead to the creation of Unrequited Death, the exhibit now on display at the Ottawa Museum of Natural History. Originally released in 2009 in St. John’s Newfoundland, this is the first time Unrequited Death has traveled outside of its origin province.

Crow Funeral I (Sketch)

The exhibit, which officially opened March 23rd, will be on display on the third floor of the Museum of Natural History until September 3rd of 2012. It features a uniquely captivating mix of real biological specimens found in Canadian natural history collections, which Ms. Gregory has artfully placed over backgrounds reminiscent of the Victorian era. The combination offers an original and interesting collaboration of art and science. In her own words the purpose of the work is to “explore notions of transience and permanence, nature and culture.” Of course all art is open to interpretation, so sometime in the next five months take your chance to check out this one of a kind display of art, history and science that is Helen Gregory’s Unrequited Death.

The bywardofmouth team was lucky enough to be invited to a special VIP showing of the new exhibit where we had a chance to talk to Ms. Helen Gregory herself.

Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show

Just in time for the early summer like weather, the CE Centre played host to the Outdoor Adventure and Travel show this past weekend. The show offered a more then tempting and inspirational array of summer fun possibilities. From world wide travel, to adventures right here in our own back yard, upon leaving the show the options for adventure this summer seemed limitless.

As you entered the show room floor the centre piece of the show was hard to miss. A large pool roughly five feet deep and maybe thirty long, was placed just inside the doors in the middle of the floor. Throughout the day there was a number of live water shows and demonstrations, including kayaking, canoeing and scuba diving. During certain parts of the demonstrations audience also got an underwater perspective featured on screens placed around the pool and fed from a live underwater camera on the end of a pool skimmer pole.

Naturally there were numerous kiosks and live attractions to experience. Among these were a number of interactive displays and an amplitude of products ranging from kayaks to clothing. One of the more unique kiosks belonged to the Finding Life Film School who had a camera set up for anyone who wished to do an interview explaining why they thought they were a good candidate to be selected for a one of a kind trip to Kenya where you would be part of a film team hiking Mount Kilimanjaro.

A number of local businesses didn’t miss out on the opportunity to show off their impressive wares either, like Altitude Gym who had an impressive rock wall towering over the show and Kunstadt Sports who had a wide range of bicycles and products on display. Another local business present was GO Skydiving, who were promoting their own pre-season savings for jumpers in the Ottawa area. In addition to the offers, draws, displays, products and travel options presented, there was a consistent flow of speakers who could be found on one of two stages at opposing ends of the floor. The speakers ranged from mountain climbers to photography teachers and spectators could listen in as they passed or claim a seat in the audience and take in the talks. Overall the two day event was well worth the 12$ admission for anyone looking for some outdoor adventure and travel this summer.

Masta Ace

The legendary Masta Ace of the Juice Crew touched down in Ottawa, hailing all the way from Brownsville, Brooklyn. The hip-hop veteran is renowned for his lyrical complexity & has had major influence on modern day emcees.

Ace is no stranger to Ottawa – he has preformed in the Capital before and this time around his reception was huge. Ritual was packed & he had the whole club chanting “Ottawa is the house” and “Ottawa is number one” before shutting the venue down with an hour-plus set featuring all his classics. Even though his set was much longer than usual, the crowd did not miss a beat and stayed with him the whole time.

After sound check bywardofmouth had time to sit down and chop it up with the legend himself. We touched on everything from his early influences, the current state of hip-hop, what it was like hearing himself on the radio for the first time and much more.
